Connecting the dots 2-25-2010

Or at least trying to keep track of everything... I want to first give you an insight into what I've been reading this morning, then we'll see where it leads us. As many of you know, I'm a believer that excess profits flow through to the real estate sector and have referred to Fred Harrison's book on the subject often (http://www.amazon.com/Boom-Bust-Prices-Banking-Depression/dp/0856832545/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267115867&sr=8-1 - it's a must read).Viewing the remainder of this article requires a Subscription

solutions… and immediate action,” the governor said as he called the
Legislature back into session to deal with the budget shortfall. “We
must stop the bleeding.”

US infrastructure is going to be a MAJOR THEME going forward.

The proposition would allocate $9.95 billion to the California
High-Speed Rail Authority. Of that $9.95 billion, $9 billion will be
used to construct the core segments of the rail line from San Francisco to the Los Angeles
area and the rest will be spent on improvements to local railroad
systems, which would feed into the high-speed rail mainline. However,
the project would still depend on federal matching funds, since a $9.95
billion bond issue would cover at most half of the estimated cost of
the initial core segment.[3] The money will be raised through general obligation bonds that are paid off over a time period of 30 years.[3]

California Cities Cut Police Budgets Housing Downturn, Weak Economy Sap Revenues, Forcing Public-Safety Reductions

VALLEJO, Calif. — When the economic crisis deepened this fall, this
city already was losing scores of police and firefighters because it
could no longer afford the rich salaries and benefits it offered after
the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Now, with crime on the rise and tax
revenue sinking, this San Francisco Bay area city faces more cuts in
police and fire department budgets.
